Maggie Yu, MD

“Focusing on the root causes is what I’m all about!”

Dr Maggie YuIn 2010, Dr. Yu was involved in a car accident which has significantly limited her physical capacity to see patients.   Read her letter for more information.  She's is no longer accepting new patients and is working with existing patients to transfer care to other providers in the clinic as she transitions to primarily administrative position in the clinic as our full time medical director.  As medical director, Dr. Yu will be present full time in the clinic to supervise all providers and staff and oversee the care of all patients in the clinic. She is passionate about making sure that the quality, consistency, and philosophy of care continues with every provider that a patient sees.  She is continuing to practice medicine full time, as our medical director and seeing a limited number of patients for physical medicine injections for which is is the expert in the clinic.

Dr. Yu’s philosophy towards patient care is the same philosophy she chooses for her own health.  “I believe in educating myself and my patients on many options for their health.  I love the benefits of holistic health options, and balance that with the latest in medical treatment. When you know the options, you can pick and choose to individualize and optimize your healthcare.   I believe in finding root causes and treating the process that causes the problem so we don’t have to band-aid all the end results instead. That is the goal of what we do here at SFM no matter what provider you see ”

Dr. Yu had a large practice and saw men, women, and children of all ages.  She focused in holistic hormonal management utilizing both hormonal, non hormonal and natural modalities. If hormonal management is necessary, she is an advocate in the use of bio-identical hormones.  Read more about SFM’s expertise in our article about hormonal health. She and the clinic also focused in the diagnosis and management of irritable bowel syndrome, food intolerance, and celiac disease. Her passion continues in thyroid health and the integrative management of Hashimotos.   She loves finding the latest in nutritional, cardiovascular, and cancer prevention testing to deal with root causes early to change the course or eliminate disease.  She brings the latest and provides ongoing training for the staff and providers to ensure all patients benefit from her unique training and insight.   Maggie and Bob

One of Dr. Yu's children has Autism spectrum disorder and close family members with ADD spectrum disorder.  Both of these conditions are very close to her heart and they have been areas of special focus for her and our clinic continues to focus on the spectrum disorders.  She loves to provide a truly integrative thoughtful approach to both of the above conditions.  Many of these individuals have undiagnosed genetic disorders, hearing, brain processing disorders, underlying gut absorptions, autoimmune disorders, and brain chemistry abnormalities.  She loves to offer many testing and treatment options that can open up a new world for these patients.  She, Dr. Hicks, Jenn Lucas, and  Dr. Rice enjoys continuing education and bringing the latest on the integrative treatment of the Spectrum disorders to the other providers in the clinic.

Dr.Yu has an ongoing interest in physical medicine.  She enjoys bringing the latest in medical and holistic approach to musculoskeletal disorders.  She is an expert in the use of injections with steroids or homeopathic medicinals.  These injections can be used for mesotherapy, trigger point injections, prolotherapy, the removal of scars and adhesions.  They can be used to treat any joint pain, contractures, neck pain, low back pain, hip pain, and fibromyalgia. She works with accupucturist, physical therapists, and chiropractors to give musculoskeletal issues a truly thorough and integrative appraoch.  Make sure when you ask for an appointment for Dr. Yu, that you specifically say you want an evaluation for injections, as that's the only area she will continue to see patients on her own in as no one else in the clinic does some of these procedures.

Dr. Yu attended UCLA undergraduate (majoring in history, yes some of us are educated in the humanities) and medical school. She completed her residency at Kaiser, Los Angeles in family medicine and later worked for Kaiser in Pasadena. She and her family moved to Portland a decade ago, and since that time, she has worked for a large medical group where she was the medical director. With a strong belief in integrating medical and holistic care, she’s left corporate medicine behind is now the medical director of SFM.  She and Dr. Carrie Jones who is our naturopathic medical director teams up to provide ongoing medical and naturopathic training for all our providers and staff.

Dr. Yu is married, and a working mother of three children.  She "enjoys" getting her bootie kicked in Mancala and Yatzee by her youngest, and hearing all about paleobugs and fossils from her oldest. She enjoys writing, painting and cooking, finding them very relaxing and creative. She’s recently realized her dream of cooking on a traeger grill… and professes, “once you’ve gone traeger…you can’t go back.” She loves to travel, walk in the rain, and used to love to go riverrafting, and boarding at the Oregon coast with her family.  To review the benefits of walking in the rain.., press rewind to childhood :)
