Elizabeth Lewis, P.A. (Physician Assistant)
Elizabeth is a primary healthcare provider and is currently accepting new patients. Patients describe Elizabeth as conscientious, thorough, caring, and a great listener. We're glad she choose to join SFM, as she was a highly sought after and exceptional primary care provider candidate with very impressive experience and creditials. (shh...check out the list below) She attended graduate school at Duke University’s Physician Assistant Program where she received a Master of Health Sciences degree and PA Certificate of Completion. At Duke, she earned several honors including induction into Pi Alpha National Honor Society, the Harriet and Fred Pomeroy Scholarship, and the Seeley Estabrook Trust Award. She also has a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience with honors distinction from Bates College and is a member of Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society and the College Key National Honor Society. She is nationally certified as a Physician Assistant through the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Prior to entry into the PA profession, she worked in healthcare for many years in various roles including with Harvard Medical School as a clinical research assistant, as an emergency medical technician, and as a medical assistant at a primary care clinic.
She enjoys providing care for the entire family. She is an expert in preventative care, cardiovascular health, diabetes care, and the evaluation and treatment of ADD. While her training is in traditional allopathic medicine, she has been a lifelong advocate for complementary and alternative medicine practices, and looks forward to working with patients to offer a thoughtful integrative approach to disease management and prevention. Elizabeth is a firm believer in using evidence based medicine, and keeps up to date on the latest research and recommendations to provide the best care to her patients. She has a particular interest in heart disease prevention and management, as well as an extensive background working with individuals with mental health concerns. She has a growing interest in working with patients with food intolerance and those who desire more holistic options for their mental health. On a personal note, her hobbies include running, hiking, yoga, and pretty much anything active and preferably outdoors. She has completed several half marathons and is looking forward to experiencing some races on the West Coast, as she recently relocated here from North Carolina. Originally from Vermont, she is a country girl at heart and loves gardening, foraging local mushrooms, and cooking tasty vegetarian and ethnic meals. When the rain forces her indoors, she enjoys cuddling with her husband and two adorable cats.
What is a Physician Assistant (PA)? A physician assistant is concerned with preventing, maintaining, and treating human illness and injury by providing a broad range of health care services that were traditionally performed by a physician or medical practitioner. Physician assistants conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, give medical orders and write prescriptions same as any other primary care provider. Physician assistants receive several years of extensive post graduate training in certfied and competitive physician assistant training programs. They work in hospitals, clinics, and other types of health facilities, and exercise autonomy in medical decision making as determined by their supervising physician, surgeon or medical practitioner. Physician assistants are not to be confused with medical assistants, who perform administrative and simple clinical tasks with limited postsecondary education under the direct supervision of physicians and other health professionals, or nursing assistants. In the United States, the profession is represented by the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Click this link from the AAPA to learn more about physician assistants. |
