Dr. Jennifer Hicks, ND
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. Hicks to our staff. She is a highly sought after, well trained, and experienced naturopathic physician. Dr. Hicks has been practicing naturopathic medicine in an integrative setting on the East Coast for the past several years and is an expert in the areas of the use of bio-identical hormones in females, thyroid, adrenal, autoimmune disease, gut health including food intolerance and functional gut issues, allergies, and skin conditions. She also loves to see children and treats children with spectrum disorder as well. As of October 2011, Dr. Yu has limited her direct care of patients to be our administrative medical director, she has encouraged her patients to transfer their care to Dr. Ruiz or Dr. Hicks, both of whom she has and will continue to spend a great deal of time working closely with to provide the smoothest transition for her patients. Patients will find Dr. Hicks to be extremely knowledgeable, self-assured, direct, easy to talk to, and truly an expert in all the areas of focus in our clinic. (shh...she was the valdictorian at her medical school, that's not easy at NCNM) She is originally from Indiana, where obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Indiana University. She graduated six years ago(with Dr. Jones), from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, and completed a 2-year residency in family practice medicine after graduation. She has practiced in an integrative clinic in Providence, Rhode Island as well as a naturopathic clinic outside of Boston. She also has experience teaching as adjunct faculty at both the National College of Natural Medicine and at Wheaton College in Massachusetts. “The human body has a remarkable capacity to heal, and the right type of assistance (nutrition, lifestyle habits, emotional support, etc.) can facilitate great change in an individual’s overall health.” Dr. Hicks uses many different therapies to help her patients achieve wellness, including nutrition, vitamins, minerals, herbal medicine, bio-identical hormones, and pharmaceuticals as necessary. She is able to write prescriptions as naturopathic physicians are licensed to practice primary care and write prescriptions in Oregon. Additionally, she is experienced in working with homeopathic remedies and flower essences to provide support to the energetic and emotional needs of her patients. She considers lifestyle coaching and patient education a vital part of effective healthcare. Her patients describe her as a compassionate, caring and knowledgeable healthcare provider. “ I am dedicated to listening to and respecting my patients, as well as providing them with support and education regarding their health conditions and treatment options.” After three years of living and working in New England, Dr. Hicks’ love of the Pacific Northwest brought her back to Oregon. She is looking forward to the Portland winters where snow is mostly optional (mountain trips as desired) and summers are warm and dry (not hot and humid). She lives in SW Portland with her husband, son, and various four-legged family members. She enjoys hiking, cooking, organic gardening, river rafting, relaxing on the beach, and creating stained glass art.
**Naturopathic Physicians (N.D.) are primary care practitioners trained as specialist in natural medicine. They are educated in conventional medical sciences, but are not orthodox medical doctors (allopathic physicians, or M.D.). A Naturopathic Physician has a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine degree from a four-year graduate level naturopathic medical college with admission requirements comparable to those of conventional medical schools** |
